Abstract

Ethical practice is the foundation of legal service delivery in law clinics, particularly in women-focused clinics that serve vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. This paper examines the dynamics of ethical practice at the Women’s Law Clinic in Ibadan, Nigeria, with particular emphasis on how ethical conduct influences case outcomes and clients’ experiences. It argues that ethical responsibilities in law clinics extend beyond the traditional duties prescribed by the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners. In matters involving maintenance and upkeep, transparency and accountability in the handling and disbursement of client funds are essential. Despite the importance of ethical practice in law clinics, limited scholarly attention has been paid to the unique ethical obligations and challenges arising from the diverse categories of disputes handled by clinics operating within the framework of Clinical Legal Education in Nigeria. The study concludes that ethical compliance significantly enhances client trust, effective dispute resolution, client cooperation, and access to justice. It recommends the development of specialised ethical guidelines for law clinics, the inclusion of non-lawyer clinic staff within such ethical frameworks, continuous ethics training for law clinicians, and the establishment of stronger accountability mechanisms.
