Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has significant implications for legal practice, requiring a shift in legal education to integrate sustainability principles and address related societal challenges. This includes incorporating environmental, social, and economic dimensions into legal curricula to prepare future lawyers for a sustainable future. One of the pressing challenges in legal education is the inability to effectively integrate sustainable development principles into the curriculum. This study aimed to explore the extent to which sustainability is incorporated into legal education and to examine the challenges and opportunities faced by Nigerian universities in fostering sustainability awareness among future legal professionals. The methodology adopted is doctrinal, utilizing primary and secondary sources. The findings revealed resistance to curriculum change and difficulties in interdisciplinary integration. The paper advocates that climate change law should be introduced as a mandatory course in law faculties to prepare law students for future challenges, while practicing lawyers should be trained through continuous legal education. It recommends that by integrating sustainable development into legal education, law graduates and practicing lawyers will be better equipped to handle issues that extend beyond traditional legal studies.
